FAQ

Where is the studio?

Highland Park, Los Angeles, California. Located blocks away from some of the best cafes, restaurants, bars, and boutique retail in the city. Far enough from the loud hustle and bustle, yet close enough to be conveniently connected to the rest of LA. Need to take a break and get some air? We have a yard, patio dining table, and a beautiful park 2 blocks away in a safe and quiet neighborhood.

Who is the studio for?

K House West is distinct from a traditional recording studio. We cater to producers/engineers who are collaborating with their artists in small teams and prefer to use their own computer while working. Perfect for traveling/transient creators, writing sessions, overdubs, mixing, and content capture.

I have a band – can you record live drums?

Short answer: Not really. We do not have a traditional large enough live room nor the inputs needed to record drums properly. However, if you are a band and want to record vocals, overdubs, mix, and just about everything else, we can help with that!

I am a songwriter and I need help with getting a producer to work on my songs. Do you guys do that sort of thing?

Short answer: Yes! You can contact Mark McKee directly to inquire about his production services, cost, and availability.

OK, this is gonna be nerdy, but I’d like to know – how is it all connected? Do you have a patch bay? Can I bring some of my own gear? Are there guest inputs available?

Gotcha! So, let’s get nerdy. Contact us to request the tech layout and input list. We do not have an outboard patch bay, but it’s no problem to provide clients with available guest inputs if they would like to bring their own gear. Our custom .uadmix console has  all the front end signal chains and routing set for you.

That upright piano looks amazing! I’d like to film some content here. How does that work?

Sure! K House West has hosted compact yet visually captivating “Tiny Desk” style live performance videos , where the musicians are placed in the piano room and can be lit and shot professionally, all the while capturing the best audio possible via our normal recording set up. These two spaces are separate, and we can run the mics/instrument cables to the adjacent room. This is ideal for a few performers doing an acoustic/stripped down style. NOTE FROM THE OWNER

What began during the 2020 Covid lockdown as a project studio for my own work soon evolved into a place where my fellow travelling producers, artists and songwriters needed a reliable space to make music and record. I was touring as a musician for other artists and travelling to other studios, which often left my place vacant. I found there were so many other creators who worked like I did, needed access to a set up like mine, so I decided to make it easy for them to come in and work here, enjoying this place as much as I do!

Another thing that I aim to do here is solve a bigger problem. Studio technology has drastically evolved, and we don’t need all the gear we used to, relying on so much in the box. However we do need things to be fast, efficient, and smooth. I found myself going to other studios with all the bells and whistles, hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gear, yet it was difficult and messy to plug my work computer into their system – or more often than not it was simply unable to be done. Most modern producers would agree, our computers are our prized instruments, they are full of the tools we use that are particular to us – without them we feel pretty useless. With this in mind, we should also be able to utilize the bare essentials that a great studio has to offer: A well treated room, great monitoring, a few pieces of stellar and functional gear, and of course a comfortable and inviting atmosphere. I spent years getting this place exactly how I wanted it, and it’s my joy to be able to share it for those who are looking for the same things. Let K House West be a place to help you and your crew make something great!
